With Stranger Will, the temptation to integrate the preorder extras into the thematic content of the book itself was obvious and too persistent to ignore. A large part of the book deals with the trade of messenger pigeon messages between a woman named Mrs. Rose and to-be parents who are, shall we say, less … →

I would normally hold off on announcing a publication until the publication in question has been, well, published. But Warmed and Bound is different. Warmed and Bound is a story collection many, many years in the making. Honestly, since the start of The Velvet forums, the idea of a collected story collection has been tossed around. And finally, with talent figuratively forcing apart the forum seams, it’s about time the group warmth is bound for all to read. What makes … →

I have been reading > Kill Author for quite some time. The fiction they publish rarely disappoints, the editors are anonymous, and the layout of the site makes reading super-dooper easy. So when they accepted my story Evenson’s Tongue for publication, I felt truly unworthy. Readers of this blog will know that I am a fan of Brian Evenon’s work. He is consistently impressive. His work does things with the grotesque that many writers try yet few accomplish. So, a … →

News aggregator sites collect information in strange ways. Ever since Otherworld Publications went public with their 2011 book lineup, many unrelated aggregator sites have picked up the story. Usually, even with the seemingly unrelated, there is something within the text of a press release that would cause aggregators to jump on board. Let’s see if we can find those reasons.
Professional Orange Alert kind gent, Jason Behrends, invited me to contribute to his weekly arts and literature podcast. I’ve been dabbling in podcasting lately (contributing to The Velvet Podcast and getting things in line for next week’s AWP Conference, where I’ll have an audio feed to document the event), so to have this additional swath of experience is nice. For this week’s episode, I read my story “Our Guy” which originally appeared at Word Riot.
There is little inherent meaning in things. Objects are defined by their context. For example, in the African savanna, an elephant keeps an eye out for lions and crocodiles. In a circus, an elephant had better do some tricks. In both scenes, the elephant itself does not change. But the way it is described would change dramatically. Context defines everything. So went the impetus for my story “Vertigo Unbalanced,” which has been recently reprinted in the Gold Dust Magazine anthology, … →

We watch reruns of Leave it to Beaver or Lassie and imagine how great it would have been to have lived during those depicted times, times when war meant girls and the biggest threat to our national heath was undercooked vegetables. Because these hyper-polished versions of reality were standard TV fare, they became following generations’ standard understanding … →

That’s 9,750 words by 65 authors, each with claim to 1/65th of a Puschart nomination. The cause: the 2008 Nefarious Muse short fiction contest. And although this heavy little taste of that novel did not win, I am proud to say the good folks over at Cause & Effect recognized something redeeming and accepted it for their issue 12.
UPDATE: The contest has ended. My short story, “A Trench is No Place for God,” is now live at Nefarious Muse. And not just live, but live as part of the 2008 Nefarious Muse Short Fiction Competition. Please, go to their great fiction site, read the entries, and vote for the best. Of course, I am hoping your vote goes to my story. In case you vote otherwise, realize that I know where you live; thank you IP Address and … →

The Bizarro journal, Bust Down the Door and Eat All the Chickens, has published my short-short piece “The Barber Who Calls Himself Ferguson” in their recently released Issue 7, available as a free .pdf download here. Other writers include John Edward Lawson, D. Harlan Wilson, Jason M. Heim, and others. “The Barber…” is quite a bit different than what I usually write, as my aesthetics since this story was originally written (2004) have changed. This is by no means a … →

No Record Press has just posted my story, “Car Dodging.” More importantly, the editor for No Record Press, Miles Newbold Clark, has written a fantastic novel called None of This Will Do. Now What? which I called, in my Depraved Press review, “one of the best novels of 2007.” I know what you are thinking – favors, right? – but know that I didn’t even know about None of This Will Do. Now What? until Mr. Clark notified me that … →

I thought I’d do something different this time around. I recently read Jeremy Robert Johnson’s story collection “Angeldust Apocalypse” (which is absolutely amazing); with it JRJ does something unique. At the end of the collection he as a section called Author’s Notes, which are a series of anecdotal behind-the-scenes snippets on each story. Here’s hoping it catches on. So, with my newest publication I figure I would do the same. Present Magazine has just posted my story “Dry Dot.” Here’s … →

Via the work of Stephen Graham Jones, author of tomes and short stories alike, I came upon Word Riot, an online literary magazine showcasing some of the best short fiction around. Diving further I came upon former fiction co-editor of Word Riot, David Barringer’s story collection “We Were Ugly So We Made Beautiful Things.” This brief work (68 pages) absolutely below me away. I knew, after reading that collection, that I had to be a part of whatever Barringer had … →

Flash fiction: feeding a demographic composed of people without much time to read but with plenty of time to think. I used to think of flash fiction as a pompous intellectual commercial; there is something buried in there, but more often than not it doesn’t want you to know what it is. The burden lay with the critic. But then I happened upon a little thing called the internet, where flash fiction has been allow to flourish outside—and even influence—academe. … →

Any form of expression is arguably one committed “under the influence.” What we eat, what we say, how we walk—hell, human beings simply walking is really just a biological influence. But historically, for writers, one of the most iconic influences of all time is Absinthe—The Green Muse; a devastating liquor. Everyone from Ernest Hemmingway (his short story “Hills Like White Elephants” comes to mind) to Joey Goebel (with his novel Torture the Artist) has capitalized on the image of Absinthe. … →

Online literary magazines seemed to me for the longest time some form of blasphemy. Not much compares to the tactile and aesthetic appeal of a printed, bound journal. Maybe that sounds a little creepy, but I’m a creepy guy. So when writer and friend Christopher Dwyer posted over at Write Club about this online lit-mag called Dogmatika I wasn’t exactly crushing keys to get over there. But call me a convert.Dogmatika was the eye opener. It stands as not only … →
