The idea to write a letter to the editor of Spirit Magazine was a bit of a selfish endeavor. Every word in the letter to the left (click for a full size image) is true, but in all honesty I wrote primarily to request a free copy of the Tom Waits issue; that part of the letter wasn’t printed. I had nabbed a copy for myself, but upon arriving home I realized that I might be able to sell a Tom Waits magazine on eBay (lord knows I’ve paid many a dollar for Waits stuff on eBay). So, I did just that, keeping one copy for myself. Sold the other for $6 if I remember right. Not bad for a few words of praise.

But it gets better (it is possible, you may sarcastically ask). The same month the printed letter hit the newsstands (seatbacks?) I flew to Chicago for a Cubs game. During the flight one of my coworkers mentioned my letter to a flight attendant. The attendant brought me a delicious, free rum and coke!

If I get free drinks for every printed Letter to the Editor there might be a feasible comped-drunk in my future. Maybe I’ll cut out the middleman and write only to Jagermeister and Frangelico.
