[VIDEO TRANSCRIPT] The credits are rolling on Final fantasy 7 remake and I loved it… But maybe for reasons you don't expect I avoided playing Final Fantasy VII Remake for a long time. But not because of some unhealthy affinity for the original. I believe change is almost always good. Loving something isn't a reason to keep that something from evolving into something else. That's basically Munchhausen syndrome by proxy. You know, that mental condition whereby a healthy person is tricked by a crazy person into feeling unhealthy. By loving the original Final Fantasy VII to the exclusion of Final Fantasy VII Remake you're defining something so specifically that it depends on you in order to be relevant. That's a selfish outlook.

I just finished playing Maquette, an incredibly unique first person puzzle game developed by Graceful Decay and freshly published by Annapurna Interactive. Is Maquette a good game? Is Maquette fun? Watch this video review for my thoughts on the game. Maquette is a first person puzzle game, which is a genre I love very much. The magic of 3d puzzlers is that they must, almost by definition, introduce players to mechanics they’ve probably never seen before. Portal blew player’s minds with the portal mechanic. The Turing Test forces players to embody multiple characters. The Talos Principle relies heavily on line-of-sight puzzles. The QUBE games have players manipulate colored blocks to solve platforming puzzles. First person puzzle games are unlike any other gaming genre in that every game really must be unique. Copying platformer mechanics is common, and is seen as a sign of respecting traditions. Copying puzzle game mechanics is a lack of imagination. Maquette honors this requirement by introducing a wholly unique size-manipulation mechanic.

The demo of the new Zelda game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, was just released on the Nintendo Switch eShop. I jumped in to play the video game not expecting much. However, I was happily impressed by this entry in the Legend of Zelda game.

I heard that The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a lot like What Remains of Edith Finch, so I knew I had to play it because I love seeing games fail to be greater than the greatest game of all time. I’m probably approaching this game unfairly, huh?

The credits are rolling on Evoland, a unique JRPG so heavily inspired by early The Legend of Zelda Games, early Final Fantasy games, and Diablo that if I owned any of those properties I’d have an urge to sue.
